The transmission of the automatic car is characterized by the fact that it usually consists of 4 digits, and they bear the following letters: P – N – D – R, and each of them carries a function according to its letter.

P: It is the first letter of the word Parking, which means the place where the car is parked. This mode is used to stop the car in one of the places allowed to park.

N: It is the first letter of the word Neutral, and this mode is used to move the car and stop it in the neutral position.

D: It is the first letter of the word Drive, and this mode is used to move the car’s wheel forward. When the driver presses the fuel paddle and puts the transmission in D position, the car moves forward.

Many cars also have other options depending on the number of speeds that the automatic transmission has

D3 or 3: This mode is used when the vehicle is in first, second, or third gear; So that the vehicle speed is determined and the change between these modes without changing to the fourth gear.

D2 or 2: This mode aims for the car to go either in first or second gear only.

D1, 1 or L: In this mode, the car is in first gear only. Overdrive, OD or O/D OFF: This mode is limited to cars and is used to delay the shifting of the transmissions and also reduces transmission overheating.

General rules when driving an automatic car The following steps should be followed when driving an automatic car:

If the engine is running, the gear must be in the P position. without going through position N.

If the gear is in the N position, and the driver wants to reverse the vehicle; The gear shift can be shifted to the R position so that the driver makes sure that the car is in complete stability by depressing the brake pedal, and in this case there will be no movement in the car, and then the gear shift is shifted to the R position and the car really starts to move backwards, and it is The gas pedal can be depressed to increase the reverse speed.

If the gear is in the P position, and the vehicle is to be brought forward; In this case, the gear must be moved directly to position D by passing through positions R and N. In case the gear is in position N and the car is to be brought forward; This can be done by directly shifting the gearbox to position D.

If the car is reversed, and the car is in position D, it must be ensured that the car is stationary and never moving, so that it is in a position of complete stability, before shifting the gear from D to N and then to R.

Use the N position with a long duration; So that no pressure is formed on the gearbox, engine and brakes.

If the driver wants to park the car between a group of cars, the steering gear can be placed in the P position so that the car does not move.
