Further details of the contract dispute between Payne Haas and the Brisbane Broncos have emerged, with the superstar prop reportedly insulted when the club refused to include a clause that would allow Haas to leave early if Brisbane finds themselves in the near future. seasons would fail to reach certain ladder positions.

Haas requested an immediate release from Red Hill on Wednesday night after contract negotiations failed, with the reigning Dally M Prop of the Year seeking an improved deal and a one-year extension.

Haas then told The Daily Telegraph: “I’d like to stay.

Now, The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Haas – who turned down an improved six-year contract offer from the club last year – wanted to include a unique breakout clause in his next deal.

The Herald reports that the clause would allow the three-time reigning Brisbane player of the season to leave the club if they fail to make the top eight in the first year of his new contract.

The clause would allow Haas to leave if the Broncos miss the top six in the second year of the deal, and in the third year if they fail to make it to the top four.

In his four seasons with Brisbane so far, the youngster has only made one final game – the 58-0 humiliation by the Eels in 2019. The Broncos are currently fourth on the NRL ladder and are confident their young side will thrive develop into serious contenders for the premiership, but were reportedly unwilling to agree to Haas’ unique clause.

Haas currently earns about $750,000 for this season, and that figure rises to just under $800,000 and again to nearly $850,000 in 2024, the final year of his current deal.

Haas’ agent requested an immediate increase to $1 million for next year and 2024, and again to a staggering $1.2 million by 2025, in what would be a one-year extension on his current deal.

The Broncos denied Haas’ demands and his breakout clause, leading to the player’s bombing this week. But both sides will return to the negotiating table in the coming weeks in hopes of a solution.
